let us have a self-fulfillment print order capability
SM's fulfillment is very swish. Problem is it's only valid for US people - printing costs and lead times make orders for EU customers prohibitively expensive.
I know several other would like this feature, and like many others, I've been playing around with paypal payments (there's a good thread on dgrin about it). Problem is, well, it's paypal and doesn't give the photographer / seller the option to view an order before receiving payment.
Google has a far better order processing system, but doesn't support logistics; a third party shopping cart is required and that costs money!
So, why not open up SM's excellent print ordering system so that SM members can receive an order via email and manage the fulfillment themselves? :)
Being based in the UK, I'm not losing out on people not being able to buy my photos easily and because of that, I fear I may cancel my SM renewal because it's a real showstopper for me...
You have gift cards but amazingly can't see anyway to sell gift vouchers or gift photo experiences online to customers in different values i.e £25, £50, £100 etc.
All the options to print are nice and uniform...however as 'artists' we may have something unique to offer that currently can only be offered by adding a paypal button within gallery..it would be nice and more client friendly to be able to 'type in' a product for sale.
to please allow photographers to use their own print labs and let them fill their own orders
I would like to be able to print my own images for sale. My friend uses Zenofolio and she says they allow it. Smugmug would still get a cut for handling the sale.
When personal delivery is set up, I would like to be able to add my own Selections and Pricing to the Porfolio Pricing and be able to add that to a package. This would eliminate many other requests to add this or that from BayPhoto (like dog tags or keychains or mugs) that are not currently offered on the pricing menu. If allowed to add these manually, I could put "Paint Photo on side of Cow: $150" if I wanted. (sorry PETA- this is just an example) and also make this part of a package. This would be a HUGE benefit to those of us that need items that are not on the list.
I would join in a second!
and price we want. That way if we have some special product unique to us we can offer it thru the shopping cart and SM still gets their cut.
An independent shopping cart is required of the photographers choice and currency ie in the UK... So that we can print our own images the way we like to print them. As some one who has is own printing machines I do not need any one to print my work... www.walterjamesphotography.co.uk
Currently we only have the offerings from the partnership of Bayphoto and Smugmug unless I overlooked something. There are countless other products that my business offers such as license plates, name tags, metal cd cases, logo design and etc through other labs and personal creation. It would ROCK to be able to add my own custom products and either they complete themselves or even just being able to set it up for purchase of these items from my Smugmug and I self-fulfilling. Also being able to sell session fees and etc. Thanks!
Add a button in the shopping cart, so that when customers have added everything they want to order, they can select the "e-mail it" button, and it shoots an e-mail with their order to the Pro.
I would like to be able to add self-fulfilled items to the cart through SmugMug. This could include sitting fees, charges for CD/DVD disks of the images, DVD slideshows that I create, etc.). Thank you for the consideration!

I agree completely, I am an AUS based photographer and I would love self fulfillment. I dearly want to stay with Smugmug (I have recently renewed) but unless this feature is offered soon, I am afraid I will have to move to Zenfolio. I have a colleague at the moment who is looking for something and I suggested SmugMug, but as it does not have self fulment, he will probably go Zenfolio or PhotoMerchant. Shame, he really likes my site.

Sadly I have tried to communicate our frustrations to SM's "help" so as to generate some meaningful reply to no avail.
At best, I have been diplomatically deflected back to this forum which does nothing to answer the question: why continue to deny us this option?
In light of this, I have just closed two SM accounts. Hopefully if enough people start cancelling their service, SM will eventually get the picture and actually do something about it.

As someone who spends no small amount of time organizing, processing, and delivering thousands of photo orders every year, I can certainly appreciate the time and effort SM's shopping cart could * theoretically * provide, even at the rather inflated lab prices.
That said, your current infrastructure clearly only caters to a small minority of the people who could actually use it:
Unless a SM user lives within a reasonable distance from your few affiliated labs, all other conditions (namely RIDICULOUS shipping costs, limited currencies and measurement units) make those beautiful labs, and your awesome shopping cart, * totally useless *.
I want to give SM the benefit of the doubt. Your pitch sounds pretty sincere, but your actions say, "We are here to give photographers what they need the most, AS LONG AS we get to keep our hands in your pockets."
If this is not the case, can SM please explain to us here the reasoning for denying photographers this basic feature so many of us want, and so many of us could USE? I'm sure there are plenty of us who would like to hear what you have to say beyond the usual deferment.
Sadly, I doubt this letter will generate a reply.
A frustrated SM user.
This would be very nice, I would love to do this as I already self fulfill and because of that im not to eager to upgrade to the next plan so i can get a e-shop.
Paul - I feel your pain - I too am tire of waiting and have signed up with Zenfolio - they have self-fulfillment. It's a very difficult decision cause I like everything else about smugmug and I have waiting patiently hoping that I wouldn't be forced to move but I too have come to the conclusion that it isn't on the radar and I can no longer afford to be patent.

Unfortunately, despite what SM has been saying for years, this is clearly not a priority for them or they would have rolled this out with the new changes (many of which are great).
They still have a lot to offer, but it's blatantly hypocritical that they claim to cater to the needs of photographers, but still continue to ignore the feature that the largest majority of their users continue to call for, and could use the most.
The lengths I have to go to get around this in regards to my photography business is beyond frustrating.
PLEASE SMUGMUG, give photographers the freedom to use their own labs.

I', like others, am being forced to move to Zenfolio or Photoshelter. Here are my reasons:
1. The only possible color space used to send orders to printers here is sRGB. This is not good for wide-gamut color landscapes.
2. There is no self-fulfillment option available, which would somewhat alleviate issue number 1.

would like to see this as well. Seems like they dont care about europeans that much. well, we can at least use pounds and euros. Not that I care about that.
Centimeters would be great as well.
Maybe I´ll move back to Photoshelter. Where I can fullfill my orders my self AND use centimeters.
It's sad to see that this request/question has been out there since 2009 and we still don't have the option for self-fulfillment. It's something that I'm looking for and other sites offer. Might need to consider switching.
I would love to use the lab fulfillment piece for prints, but offer my own self-fulfilled disc of images. For customers who ONLY purchase the disc, I have a greater need to give them something TANGIBLE (a disc, not downloads) on which I can reinforce my brand and leave them with a deliverable.
just let us print at home, or thru a walgreens or another online photo processing facility near our home. saves us postage. and you too.
Australians need self-fulfillment too, stop just focusing on the US!

I would like this feature for additional product not just for printing orders. I would like to be able to add products that we sell additionally into the order. Examples: Senior Folios, additional labor on special edit requests, ID's and so on. Thanks!

I have used you all before and your labs are great but I would like to use my own lab of choice which happens to be Millers Professional and Simply Color which you do not support. This is one of the reasons I left you last year. I love the ease of use with your site and LR as well as the quality of display but the printing made me change my mind. Please consider this option, I would love to come back~ :)
I have my own printers and print for people locally. My customers are usually local, so it would cut on shipping and turn around time. I would just like to have an online order form that would be provided by your pricing options.

I like to print in-studio for my local clients - saves them on shipping and I can customize for them. I love all of the options Smug has, but would really like to streamline the ordering process for self-fulfillment.

Afraid I moved from SM to Zenfolio who offer more features for less cost!

As of now I am forced to have two different sites. The lab I work with knows me and I get a professional discount because of this. I do not like having control over this. I love this site and could save another $300 if I did not have to pay for two sites. The biggest problem is in shipping. When your labs print for me, if it is something that I send all together, I am paying for shipping on each set of prints instead of a bulk order. The way shipping keeps going up, this is a killer in expenses.

I am also still asking for this. I live in Switzerland, which is not an EU country and does not have a SM printing partner. So for me it's a cut in profit AND a big shipping cost AND import duties. That just doesn't work.
I have an Epson 3880 printer sitting right here in my office. I need to be able to do my own printing.
Come on guys - help a girl out! ;)

I totally agree, I probably will also leave for another supplier because of this issue when my renewal is due.
