Privacy groups with separate passwords, with access to specific galleries
Give users the ability to create groups with arbitrary 'labels' e.g. : family, friends, work colleagues, parents, etc.
Allow a different password to be set for each of these groups, and perhaps even some generic settings (what size photos they get to see, for example)
In gallery settings allow a tick box to tick which 'groups' may see this gallery. (include an "all" tick box too)
When someone goes to the site, they type in the password they were given, which is the one of the group they're in. Then they get to see only what galleries have been checked for their given group with the settings assigned to their group (e.g. can only seem small photos).
I would love it if I could give another vendor from a wedding or an event a special login that would allow them to have special privileges to my photos that I don't want to give to everyone. It would be great if they could download a whole set of images as well as just one image at a time. It would also be great to set prices and options based on that login as well. For instance the photographer could set a maximum size to download, watermarking, pricing to download (including a no cost option), and a way to set special prices to print (maybe at my cost). Currently the only way I know to share images for free is a hassle to explain and do. I have to go to gallery settings and turn off "right mouse click to save" I then have to set the max file size to original, I then have to explain to the vendor how to click on the image they want and select the "original" size then have them right click to save that one image. It takes them forever so I end up doing it all by hand for each and every one. I end up doing this so so often that it drives me crazy. Essentially I am just looking for an easier way to share images with other vendors from a wedding, besides sending them an email with 6 Smugmug produced download links to download the whole wedding. Any help here would be amazing! I really love Smug Mug, but this could be a deal breaker for me.
I think it would be nice if there could be a login page for clients. I'm not talking about how it is now, with one per gallery. I'm talking about one simple page that I can link my website to where clients can go to enter their email and password and be automatically transferred to their gallery or event. It would make the whole client login process much simpler.
create a way to make people sign in to certian galleries with their name as well as password so I can see who has viewd my pics. and prevent password sharing
it would be great to allow clients to go to the site, go to "proofs" section, and just type in their password.
That would make things much easier than having them to sift through all galleries.
I'd like to be able to send the exact same link to everyone I have created a password protected gallery for, and when they arrive, have the viewer enter a unique code that I provide to them, and then have them be immediately transported to a page that shows all the galleries that have that password.
Essentially, I want to identify and navigate to a gallery by it's code, rather than having to first find the gallery and then entering the code. I think it is a way more elegant solution for viewers, especially when there are many clients. Users will not have to hunt through a slew of password protected galleries to find theirs, and I won't have to disclose what else is cookin'
Zenfolio does this, so SM should too :D
It would be neat to have password control to remove max image size restrictions:
It would be neat to give the option for people to sign into a gallery with a password that would simply remove any restrictions on max image size. Currently passwords are all or nothing so they are not very helpful for the cases when you want some people to see any size and most to see only restricted sizes.
Currently you need to go through the pain of uploading each gallery twice and doing all online customizations, captions, etc. twice or go through process of making a copy of each image each time and then moving one copy to a new gallery. All very tedious. And then if you update something, you need to keep track of both galleries, etc. (one with max original but PW protected, the other with a smaller max size but not protected).
(At the very least, allowing an instant gallery clone tool would mean you could just focus on one gallery and then each time just one button click clone it and then go in and change size restrictions and add a password to the clone each time.)
Lets say you want to offer a nice news picture to different newspapers, the option to send a password to "newspaper 1" that differs from the one you send to "newspaper 2" would be really nice. Also you should be able to see if any of them had used the download. If they download the photographer will send an invoice.
When a Viewing password is set, the site is completly lock down to unauthorized access. This is very great and works great. However, I would like to have an option near the Viewing Password similar to the one in the sharegroups configuratin: Allow automatic access to password-protected Galleries that belong to this Sharegroup.
This is useful when you give the viewing password to people that you want them to have access to all your pictures while restricting other galleries to send individual links to some people you only want them having access to a particular gallery.
As for the sharegroups, add an option to make the Viewing Password (of the entire site) to override individual gallery password. In ShareGroups, you have this checkbox: Allow automatic access to password-protected Galleries that belong to this Sharegroup.
Actually, my need is that I would like to share some specific galleries with some of my friends (with specific gallery password) while my family always have to remember one password: the Viewing Password.
The ability to make one's home page a password-portal page for clients would be extremely valuable.
Concept: Upon going to one's smugmug home page, a visitor will immediately be presented with a password input box. When inputting the password, the visitor will be directed to a corresponding category, sub-category or gallery. If sub-galleries are ever made available, then the corresponding gallery would suffice for the visitor to be directed to.
- Clients see only what we want them to.
Not all photographers want all clients to see everything he/she does. When I shoot an event for a big corporate client, I don't want him/her/them to see that I also shot fashion for a model or that I shot a prom the week before.
- Simpler Navigating
I know that my client will reach his/her galleries without extraneous clicking or inability to find it. The one password will get the visitor their directly.
- Elegant on the surface, highly complex below
I like the aesthetic of an uncluttered home page. Compare google to yahoo.
I have an application for which I need to control "subscriptions" to galleries separately, for different people, for different periods of time. I visualize a password list allowed where today we can create only a single password.
I have 3 types of customers that view my galleries:
1) my paid clients
2) their family and friends
3) general public browsing my galleries (aka portfolio)
I'd like a password for 1) and 2) that would allow them specific access to the gallery's group of images. For 1), they would have full access including images marked as "hidden". For group 2), the would see all "non-hidden" images. Finally, group 3) would not require a password and would have access only to those images that are tagged as public or maybe even a specific keyword such as "public".
Such a setup would also allow me to watermark, coupon code and set maximum resolutions specific to the three levels. For example, level 1 would have full resolution access. Level 2 would have XL resolution access. Level 3 would have L access with a watermark and no printing.
I think it would be nice to have a single sign on page for password protected galleries so picture viewer will not need to scroll through all the protected galleries to select thiers, all they need to do is get a single sign-on page regardless of the protected gallery and they can sign in without seeing or scrolling trhough all the other protect galleries to reach thiers.
Yes! Please please pretty please! This would be more than a HUGE improvement for me; it would let me do just what I have always wanted to do with SmugMug and why I subscribed to SmugMug in the first place: keep all my private photos in one place but share selected photos with selected groups of people (many of whom are unwilling or unable to create even free visitor SmugMug accounts).
I tried Private Sharing, ShareGroups and Smart Galleries but none worked for my needs. THIS would be PERFECT.

Yes, this would be great! I like the idea of being able to generally set galleries so that sharing is turned off (eg, no "right-click enabled"), but have select viewers be able to download pictures. This suggestion is even more detailed than I had in mind, but it's all a great idea. One could have one set of galleries, then have unlisted pages where friends can download for free, and pages that are viewable and searchable by the public, but do not offer downloads (at least, not without paying). Good idea.
This would be awesome.

I would love something like this. I am shooting ice hockey games. I want to offer free download for the parents from my daughter's team but sell to the opposing team. I do not want to make separate galleries or use another program (i.e. google+). I need to offer a password which would allow the free download while checking out.

I too am wanting one site to post both private and public photos. Currently sending e-mail links, but I'm sure that will become more involved as time goes on. Help Smugmug Help
i thought after the "amazing" upgrade, i will be able to create different usergroup giving each usergroup different gallery access and resolution. disappointing that number 1 request is not even considered.
After all the hoopla about the improved privacy management in the new SM, no real improvements! Why is it still not possible to limit the assistant's access to only selected folders/galleries? User groups and custom privileges are absolutely essential - especially for those who use the site to store work and personal content!! Are you listening, SmugMug?? 4 years since this request was posted, and no action??? Shame...

I think Zenfolio does this

I just had a chat with a SM Hero about this exact issue! I want to share photos with various groups of people, and have them ONLY be able to see what I want them to. Sharegroups allow you to share specific galleries, but it's just a flat view of chosen galleries. I want to maintain the look / feel / organization of my site.
Can anyone recommend another photo site that does this? I'm not sure I want to continue paying for SmugMug if I can't do this.
As for the option some are recommending of setting various gallery passwords to the same thing on every gallery you want a person to have access to, apparently that only works within 1 category!
I don't want to have to send my friends a link for every new event or trip. I just want them to all be able to get into the 'Friends' category galleries, and NOT into my Family category galleries (for example).
Can't this be done using ShareGroups?
This is ridiculous. Been waiting for years, and they've not even started on this.
I'm looking into SM alternatives at this very moment.

Yes. Yes! YES!! (I'll have what they're having...) --- or certainly SHOULD be having by now.
This is a complete failure on the part of Smugmug and why I will be moving away when my current subscription expires. I want people to be able to see one gallery and not all the others. You can "hide owner," but then you lose all of your site's formatting! Ridiculous.
second request on the list, but no answer... where are all the "heroes"?
i'm looking for alternative just for this... sm, you're missing the train
It's clear the smugmug don't take into consideration that people have stopped using them because of this simple feature.
After 3 years of using SM now I'm seriously contemplaiting going somewhere else just because of this. The waiting gets too long!

No comments for 13 months regarding this feature request?
I have been using SM since 05 but I now have so many passwords for so many different people (family/friends/coworkers/kids sport teams etc) its now become a total mess. My parents/grandparents (= "full access") now have so many passwords they dont bother to log in unless I specifically send them an email each time.
I dont know why SM dont care about this feature. Now that Im able to DL zip file of my images I may not renew next year.
I canceled my account now for this reason and am looking for an alternative. Will try Zenfolio next.
