Play videos when in slideshow mode
When using slideshow mode, it would be nice to be able to actually play the video rather than just seeing the first frame and it goes to the next picture. Ideally you are walking through the slideshow and when you hit a video then you can watch that video before it goes to the next picture or video.
This is a painful feature omission. When I share pics + videos with my family, they frequently fail to notice the videos. Folks are missing watching their grandkids steps and stuff like that! This is incredibly broken. Please please please at least add an option to allow this.
When viewing photos in slideshow mode, currently videos do not play. Just an image of that video. For those viewing that choose to view albums using slideshow mode, they would not realize there are videos in the album.
This suggestion is to support the viewing of videos when viewing albums in slideshow mode.
Yikes, again such a disappointment. Another lost feature that was basic in phanfare. :(
I'll add a comment as well as my votes. A setting to allow auto-play or not would be awesome. I use Smugmug for family mostly, and some of that family is getting older. It would be WONDERFUL to be able to have a caretaker hit "go" on a slideshow and have EVERYTHING play on a continual loop ;)
My kids would appreciate it too (so I can throw videos of them up and they can watch themselves... while I do dishes!) I hope "planned" is sooner than later since early comments say they're from 2008... we're at 9 years of asking now.
Another feature I lost when coming over from Phanfare :'(
I can't believe PF has had this for 10 years and SM (which - contrary to PF which hasn't been updated in 3 years - is still being worked on) does not.

This is an unfortunate omission. I'd really like to see it become a feature.
I'm in day 2 of my 14-day free trial. Lack of this function is a deal breaker for me, I think. And it's a complete surprise that an app so sophisticated in other ways would lack this function.
I vote "yes" to being able to play videos among the slides in "slide show" mode. It seems quite basic and is frustrating not to be able to do so. Considerably limits creativity...

Please use all my votes for the next 2 years to vote NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO on this. I am selling videos! I DO NOT WANT FOLKS TO WATCH FOR FREE.
If you enable videos to play, PLEASE, add a setting where we can decide to allow the video to play or NOT. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Seriously?? Just finished organizing a photos from a once in a lifetime trip to Australia and New Zealand. When I tried to play the videos in slide-show, nothing happened. I have been such a fan and advocate for you SmugMug "heroes" ... Don't let me and the other posters on this topic down... Come on... Put this feature in your product.
This is an expected basic functionality. Playing back a video as a photo is just plain broken unexpected behaviour. Other sites play videos as videos in slideshow mode. Videos were never intended to be viewed as 1 frame. Who would want to watch a movie as a single still photo? Worse yet, viewers will not know they only saw 1 frame of a video. It'll just seem like you have no video but it is actually there.
I agree with others for many of the same reasons. Family or event photo's and video to play with same slideshow, for friends and family to see. As the amateur shutterbug among my friends, family and co-workers I find that SmugMug is a great and easy way to share. Thanks to this blog, I now find that there is other options to get what will work better for me.
It seems that this request has been wanted since 2008 and Google and Yahoo already have these. It's sad that smugmug is way behind the times in this. Must be a business decision so save on costs for bandwidth playing videos in full screen mode. I'm for one though am not a very happy paying customer. There isn't even an indicator in slideshow mode that tells you its a video.

It would be great to have this feature for those grad parties and wedding receptions where you want have an unattended slide show that includes photos interspersed with videos. Is there some technical reason this isn't possible? It seems like the actual coding would be straightforward - just embed the video playback inside the slideshow loop. If the issue is swamping the servers with slideshow streams, then perhaps some reasonable limits would work. Some functionality would be better than none. Thanks!

I too would like to auto-play the videos among the slides in the slideshow.
I had just received a reply to a "Hero" question on this subject. I asked if there was a technical issue or if Smugmug simply didn't think it was wanted. Their reply:

Thanks for your reply. It's not a feature we currently offer. If you'd like to see such a feature in a future update, you could consider adding your vote / comment to the suggestion on the SmugMug feedback page:
SmugMug Support Hero
Today, just about all digital cameras have the ability to do HD video clips. Not all of us though care to use Adobe or such to splice together the clips and photos to a movie format for display especially when already using a service such as yours. You did a great service to us Smugmuggers by allowing HD movie uploads which I am sure required an investment in equipment. Why in the world cannot you see the benefit to us by allowing this feature? Would this be causing stress on your servers? Huge increase of Bandwith? Programming issues?
Please, if you can, explain why this feature cannot be implemented.

Would be very good

+1 to this feature request !!!
Get it done already
It's idiotic that vidoes in slide shows is still unsupported.
Iit's that time of year again and I am re-evaluationg my picture/video hosting provider.
Smugmug just lost (again!) because you don't support videos in slide shows.
I'm going with zen for this year (as they now support vids in slide shows) and will check back again with you next year.
I have been informed video clips will not function during a slide show. Is this something you would be willing to correct with programming or do you not think it would be a worthy change to make. Personally I think it would be something many would like, especially with the new breed of dslrs and m43 cameras shooting both. Many video programs, ie. Adobe Premier Elements allow producing a video with stills and video clips. With that in mind you might even add transitions. OK, I'm getting carried away lets stick with requesting you consider video clips in a slide show.Bill Bourdon
