I suggest you ...

More gallery levels.

Now you can only create 3 levels of galleries: Category > Sub category >Gallery >photos.
Make it possible to have at least one more level of galleries, or why not as many as you need.

It has been nearly 4 months since Michael popped in here and said, and I quote: "I can tell you we are working on it everyday, and as I stated, the development is coming along nicely."

Four months of working on it every day and coming along nicely ... I sure hope we're getting close.

This limitation is also impacting my use of the site and how I present galleries to my customers. Is there an estimated time of delivery as to when the feature to allow additional levels will become available, if at all?

In the meantime has anyone come up with any creative approaches to this dilemma? Do share.

I just got started with Smugmug and have already run into the subcategory issue. Please resolve this soon. I need at least 2 more levels. Please hurry...

Started since more than 2 years and still no result... I'm not sure to renew my subscription next time if nothing happens! Zenfolio has that kind of architecture with unlimited levels and password protected levels, so...

I am considering SmugMug as my photography site. Glad I found this discussion so I can see how management reacts to requests from the User group. I will follow this closely to see if a resolution is made. Hopefully something will happen before I make my decision to join.

A ridiculous limitation for a professional site. Probably would be OK for my family photos but it quickly becomes limiting for everything else. I need at least 5 levels and maybe six. Even adding one more is probably too restrictive. Zenfolio uses folders that allow unllimited nested levels. Although I like the customization of Smugmug better, I can't live with this limitation and will have to take a ****** look at Zenfolio.

I totally agree, this is a very needed feature. I have exactly the same problem as Rob Herrera has. Please, could you give some info, are you guys at least working on gallery levels and is it going to happen this year?

This has been my number one request for a while. I believe the lack of this feature is hurting my sales and site organization is one of the KEY elements of ease of use. PLEASE hurry!

I find myself needing just this very suggestion due to a shoot this past weekend.

I already have a "Sports" category and a "Gymnastics" sub-category, but need the option to create one more level for "Meet Name"---->"Session #1 (2, 3, 4, etc)---->photos

The meet lasted about 9 hrs and we shot almost 5,000 images so it would be easier for the parents just to be able to browse by session, not to mention easier to maintain.

I know I can just create 6 galleries like "Meet name - Session 1", "Meet name - Session 2", "Meet name -Session 3", etc but it's just not as tidy :-/

@Anonymous: What's the point of having your own suggestion thread if you attempt to hijack others?

I have 25 years of programming and I already know what's going on. It's not going to speed up as long as the money is coming in. Those who say are leaving, do so. Continuing to say you are leaving but staying is not going to change things, trust me. What will speed this up is if you do leave. I've done my complaints as programmer and provided alternatives to my company and the usual feedback is that it's not affecting the bottom-line so why change it. So, if you want change, leave if you find something better.

As for me, I'll be staying on until I find something better. So far what I found as alternative have features that are better but some that are not. The "are not" is what's making me stay. Just the other day, I found one that I was about to pull trigger and switch to, only to find out it no longer exist. That one was called Zangzing. Another one called Jimdo looks good but has limited storage space at the price point that I'm currently paying at Smugmug. To get unlimited cost more.

So, I know I'm going to get a ton of feedback on this, but I'm going to say cause it's getting really f*g annoying. Complain if you must but stop saying you are going to leave and just f*g leave. Making threats is not going to change things.

        adding my .02 to Anonymous.

John, I could not agree with you more, that was my point, change now before you see too many leave. Once they leave and like what they have now, they never come back. However, some companies operate that way and only change when the roof is caving in.

        All,

Many of us as customers would like to have these features sooner than later. The company, SmugMug indicates they are working on it but do not provide guidelines as to when features and maintenance releases will be targeted. I have been on both sides of the table, being leader in a large well known networking company as well as a consumer. It is never easy for either side. However, there are always choices for both sides.

As a company, what makes you successful and continue to grow in the market is a great brand and loyal customers. I believe that SmugMug has this and will continue to have it. However, without providing at least calendar year on targeted release of the top voted feature, I believe you are misleading your customers regardless of your company policy. However, until you start to see customers leave because of this, I would as you are doing, continue to stand behind your policies. I also understand that many people that are not fully aware of the implications even minor changes may have an affect on other features, let alone major changes to the architecture as our request is, I applaud you to ensuring that your platform is stable so my business continues to be on-line so I am not loosing potential sales or customers.

As a consumer, we make our purchasing decision usually on price per feature required. There are many choices to choose from which is good for us as a consumer. However, with all of the posts that are upset because of the feature not currently available or no timeline given, why are you still a customer of SmugMug? I can think of two main reasons, you are still under contract or there really is not another company offering you the other features, support or flexibility that SmugMug is providing you today.

There are a lot of good intentions through this thread. I would highly recommend that SmugMug revisit their policy on the top 3 feature requests from their customers and provide an estimated timeline with legal wording that does not hold you to those dates. Secondly, I think for the top 3 features that your customers are looking for, waive the price increase until you have provided that feature for the customer. If the customer has requested more than one of the top 3 feature requests, they will have to choose which one they want. It is a simple process to manage or implement a new process to keep track of.

For the customer, keep providing feedback to SmugMug as this is your voice to help make them a better company and provide a value differentiation among their competition. Continue to keep your comments professional and not let your emotions get in the way. If your emotions are high and continue to be high, may I suggest you look for an alternative solution.

My .02 for what it is worth!!!

Instead of a set category, subcategory, gallery structure (and clunky category manager that is completely divorced from the Gallery Settings page)...

Just switch to a folder structure. Allow folders to be nested inside each other. Allow multiple sublevels, within reason. This gallery and subgallery paradigm is outdated.

So, SmugMug has decided to build us a one-off car from scratch with all the bells and whistles. How cool is that?

Would you say the paint is drying on the chassis? Is the engine installed and ready to try and start? Is the body on? Are you having trouble hooking up and figuring out how to add all of those smog emission controls? Are you re-doing the brakes or other items because I said I wanted the best not those vintage drums you first put on? Are you waiting for the parts the chrome-plater lost?

What's left to do specifically or generally?

        What percentage is done?

If all is going "along as planned" then can you tell us more of the plan?

If all is going "along as planned" then surely you can tell us if SM plans on this major release this year, next year, within the next five years or if this is a part of your ten year plan?

        Trey,

While the admin posts are not what you are hoping for, I am here to help bridge the gap between SmugMug and our customers. You have every right to be upset, and I am more than willing to be the brunt of any negative feedback. You can even email me to discuss personally if you like. mbonocore@smugmug.com
